Hi there Pack 457 and Happy New Year.!
That’s right: June 1, this past Monday, marked the first day of our 2021 Pack year. We [the Leadership Team] are still working on a lot of stuff and we’ll be sharing that with the Pack here very soon. But, for right now, what a new pack here means is really two things for all of our Scouts.
Working toward your Next Rank
First of all Scouts, you can now start working on your next rank. So Den Six, our Lions who were working towards their Lion last year, you guys can now start working towards your Tiger Rank requirements. Den One: You were our Tigers last year. You can work towards your Wolf requirements. Den Two, Wolves now working towards Bear and so on. So, congratulations! Really looking forward to seeing where you guys go this year.
New Pack Theme for the Year
Now the second thing that happens in a new Pack year is we’re changing our Pack theme. Last year, we talked a lot about the Scout Law and the different 12 different points of the Scout Law. This year, we’re going to talk about the Scout Oath.
June 2020 Pack Theme
And our theme for June is “OATH”. What is an oath? Well, an oath really is a special kind of promise. It’s a promise that we say that we’re going to hold ourselves to in the future, it’s something you’re saying you’re going to do.
And the cool thing about the Scout Oath, is that while scouting has changed a lot in the last hundred years. Two things that haven’t changed are the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
That means if your great-grandfather, your grandfather were Scout, they said the same Scout Oath and the same Scout Law that you say at every meeting. It’s really cool!
Think about how much times have changed since 1910 when scouting was founded here in the US. Back then there was no television, no radio, movies were brand new and people had to travel by horse and carriages. Adults were working long hours, six days a week. And now you compare that to now where we have the internet and TV that we can watch on our phones. And it’s just so different from when the first Scouts came around. But the cool thing is that they made the same promise that you do at every meeting, that Oath that we say.
We’ll explore a lot more of that here in the upcoming months. But I hope this month that you go back and you look at and think about that special promise that we make whenever we say the scout oath.
Thanks, everybody. We’ll see you next week.
